Evacuation puts you in the shoes of a rebel who survives a helicopter crash and is forced to run from the combine.
It’s been 16 years since we last set foot in the White Forest, but Evac Dev. Team brings back the spirit of Half-Life 2: Episode 2 with its mod, Evacuation.
“Evacuation is an unofficial story-driven add-on for Half-Life 2, which tells the story of [a] rebel who crashes a helicopter in the forest,” the description reads. “After miraculously surviving, the hero picks up a walkie-talkie and decides to escape from the forest, which was attacked by the combine.”
It looks part Firewatch – whose developers helped develop Alyx – and part Half-Life. However, exploring this forest is a bit more dangerous as it is full of bogs, guards, zombies and more. And to really bring the forest to life, Evacuation even comes with its own original soundtrack, giving it a unique feel separate from Half-Life’s.
This is not an extension of Gordon Freeman, Barney Calhoun or Alyx Vance’s story, but depicts a rebel on the run. This is more akin to the kind of expansions we saw in the 90s and early 2000s, with Opposing Force putting us in the shoes of a HECU soldier and Blue Shift letting us see the Black Mesa incident through the eyes of a security guard .
It’s completely free provided you own a copy of Half-Life 2, and it’s out right now, so you can pick it up on Steam straight away and get stuck in. Given how long it’s been since the last big Half-Life -release, with the latest being a VR exclusive, mods like this are always worth checking out – who knows, maybe it’ll scratch the itch that’s been lingering for nearly two decades?
If it doesn’t, or you just leave and want more, modders are also working on recreating one of Half-Life’s original expansions, Decay, a PS2 exclusive co-op game that puts you and a friend in Gina Cross’s shoes. and Colette Green. These are the two who sent the sample up to Gordon which started the whole Black Mesa incident, inviting an alien invasion, and these are the two who carry the missing HEV suits next to Gordon’s. The release is still a while away, but it will open for playtests soon.
