Since the cartoon series has been airing since 1999, it’s no surprise for the illustrators to draw inspiration from one of the most played life sim video games of today’s generation.
The gaming community probably doesn’t find it strange that popular video games are used as references in other titles, pop culture movies, series or shows. Provided that Animal crossing series has been around since 2001 in Japan, there are many franchises inspired by the game’s various features and elements. This can be seen in similar life sim video games that have been produced and released over the decades, and even now, in the famous animated comedy series Spongebob Squarepants.
On Reddit, user douglyjohnny posted that they saw the Froggy Chair, one of the most popular pieces of furniture in Animal crossing series, in one of the more recent episodes of Spongebob Squarepants. In the photo they shared, the cartoon scene showed two very familiar chairs in the center of the image, with a cute table between them. Given that there was no doubt about the shape and color of the furniture, Animal crossing fans were quick to respond and comment on douglyjohnny’s thread. At the time of writing, the Reddit post has over 50 comments and is already 99% upvoted, indicating that there are many fans of Spongebob Squarepants in the forums too.
Responses to the Reddit thread showed a mix of those surprised by the furniture’s cameo and those who already knew it was only a matter of time before Animal crossing appeared in a mainstream animated series that Spongebob Squarepants.
